I first spotted the four DePue brothers (originally from down south, but now living in Philadelphia, PA area) at the Arts Presenters conference earlier this year. They only had 20 minutes to perform their showcase and they used every minute of it to wow the audience. I had to hear more, and this led me to this CD, with its tongue-in-cheek title. They are trying to reconstruct and re-imaging the traditional bluegrass band.

The four brothers have what must be the highest musical credentials of any acoustic folk/bluegrass/Americana band. All are classically trained musicians and their “day jobs” are as orchestra members. Jason is First Violinist in the Philadelphia Orchestra; Zach was the First Violinist there. Wallace works with opera companies and Alex wins fiddling contests and plays with rock bands.

The album shows the variety of their playing styles with each getting appropriate solos. The music ranges from standard bluegrass (“Orange Blossom Special”) to new takes on the classics (“Dance of the Goblins”; Leroy Anderson’s “Fiddle Faddle”) to self-penned numbers. Banjo wizard Tony Trischka joins the guys for a few numbers.

Instrumentally these guys are a five star band.

I’d love to see them play a full concert live but – with their Orchestra and other commitments – that doesn’t happen often. So I’m glad they released this CD and, hopefully, the follow-up will come shortly.

*click see more for the link* ❤️ I wanted to make sure you all had a chance to listen to a re-air of an interview with Alex and Miguel, from a radio show called "Folkscene", in 2011. Our friend Peter Cutler re-aired his interview with them, in Alex's honor, this past April 10th. I meant to share it beforehand so you could listen live, but I lost track of my brain, as is prone to happen a bit these days. However, it's available in the archives for another week, so please check it out! 2nd hour of the show. ❤️🎶🎻*Bonus Alex & Candy pic attached to post, I'm hoping that will allow more of you to see this -The Mrs. *> archive.kpfk.org/"FolkScene is a syndicated music program established in 1970. People often wonder if that magical glowing Glasser NY violin actually plays... this is video proof it does! Plus, it's just more awesome from my baby, and his musical partner Miguel De Hoyos, at their featured performance during the Olympics Arts Games in Rio De Janeiro, from 2016. Missing him so much, and it certainly is the most unpredictable emotional journey. Some moments are better than others, but he still has my heart, and there is a huge void in my life, our lives, and this world, that will never be filled. I'm forever proud to be his girl, though, and I will never stop making sure his music continues to be heard around the world, in new and exciting ways. Lots of love, Mrs. Fiddler. ...
